Skateboarding began in California and grew into a worldwide sport, art form and independent culture.
California surfers started riding wheeled boards when the waves were flat.
Polyurethane wheels transformed speed and control, while purpose-built skate parks opened.
Vert and street skating pushed tricks, videos, magazines and skate brands forward.
Skateboarding made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, held in 2021, while keeping its independent spirit.
